Sarah and Dana's Adventure in Bhutan

Tribù Travel Designer's Sarah Bello and Dana Wilson recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Bhutan, a serene and unique destination tucked away in the Himalayas. Their trip, filled with adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion, offers a detailed look into what makes Bhutan a must-visit location for those seeking something out of the ordinary.

The Journey Begins

Traveling to Bhutan is no small feat. For Sarah and Dana, it involved a 41-hour journey, a testament to the remote and virtually untouched nature of the country. Despite the long travel time, both agreed that the destination was worth every minute. To ease the journey, they recommend stopping in Japan or Thailand or India before heading to Bhutan. This not only breaks up the long travel but also offers a contrasting experience to what Bhutan provides.

A Unique Destination

Bhutan is not your typical travel destination. It requires a certain sense of adventure and a desire to experience something truly unique. Dana noted, "Bhutan offers a different vibe compared to more common destinations in Asia like Thailand or Bali" and there are a number of reasons for this:

  • Bhutan measures its success not by GDP but by Gross National Happiness, which prioritizes the well-being and happiness of its citizens over economic growth.

  • Bhutan places a strong emphasis on preserving its culture and traditions. Visitors will notice the traditional architecture, national dress (Gho for men and Kira for women), and numerous cultural festivals celebrated throughout the year.

  • Bhutan is committed to environmental conservation and is the only carbon-negative country in the world. It has constitutional mandates to maintain at least 60% of its land under forest cover and prioritizes sustainable tourism.

  • Bhutan follows a high-value, low-impact tourism policy. Daily tariffs help manage the number of tourists and ensures a positive impact on the environment and local communities.

  • The pristine landscapes of Bhutan, ranging from lush valleys to rugged mountains, offer stunning natural beauty. It is a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers, with famous treks like the Snowman Trek considered one of the most challenging in the world.

  • Until the 1970s, Bhutan remained relatively isolated from the rest of the world. Even today, it maintains a certain level of isolation with limited flights and controlled land access, preserving its unique way of life.

Distinctive and Luxurious Accommodations

Despite its remote location, Bhutan does not compromise on luxury. Sarah and Dana were particularly impressed by the high-end accommodations available, including properties from Six Senses and Aman. These hotels provide a luxurious stay, ensuring that travelers can enjoy comfort amidst the rugged beauty of Bhutan. The newly redone &Beyond Punakha River Lodge stood out to them, offering a perfect blend of luxury and local charm.

Additionally, travelers may opt for a more local experience for a few nights and stay in a homestead. A family welcomes you into their home, and this provides a glimpse into the daily lives of Bhutanese families. Guests can enjoy authentic home-cooked meals, participate in local customs, and get to know Bhutan through the eyes of a host family.

Active Adventures and Cultural Insights

For those looking to stay active, Bhutan is a paradise. The hikes, even those described as moderate, demand a good level of fitness, which Sarah and Dana found both challenging and rewarding, such as Tiger's Nest. The hikes took them through picturesque valleys and local towns, providing a glimpse into the simple and peaceful way of life in Bhutan.

Other activities include rafting, biking, temple visits, meditation, and wellness retreats. This diversity in experiences is one of Bhutan's standout features. Cultural experiences are also a highlight. Sarah and Dana participated in a cooking class where they made traditional Bhutanese dishes like momos (dumplings). They also enjoyed a unique camping experience, complete with local entertainment and archery games, and mentioned visiting the Fertility Temple as memorable.

Two people could have a drastically different experiences in Bhutan depending on personal preference. There really is so much to do between wellness, spirituality, culture, and the outdoors.

Travel Tips and Reflections

Reflecting on their trip, Sarah and Dana suggest spending at least eight nights in Bhutan to fully appreciate its beauty and tranquility. Combining Bhutan with another destination in the region, such as Nepal or India, can provide a well-rounded experience. They also noted that Bhutan might not be the best destination for families with young children due to its active nature and the type of experiences it offers.

Sarah and Dana's trip to Bhutan was a journey of discovery, filled with unique experiences, luxurious accommodations, and deep cultural insights. Bhutan, with its serene landscapes and diverse activities, stands out as a destination for those looking to explore beyond the usual tourist trails. Whether you're an adventure seeker or someone in search of peace and wellness, Bhutan offers an unparalleled travel experience that leaves a lasting impression.
